Textile Crafts of Gujarat - a Rich Cultural Heritage

Introduction

The state of Gujarat in India, popularly known as the ‘Manchester Of the East’, has a rich heritage of textile crafts. The arid region of Kutchh is the richest in the state in terms of cultural heritage. However, there are several other parts of the state which specialize in some form of textile craft or the other. In this article, we have outlined some of the traditional textile crafts of this beautiful state and have attempted to analyze the scope of these crafts.

Bandhni

The craft of ‘Tie & Dye’, typically known as ‘Bandhni’ or ‘Bandhej’ in Gujarat is practiced in several areas of the state. The term ‘Bandhni’ is derived from the Hindi word ‘Bandhan’, this means ‘tying’. Bandhni from Jamnagar, Anjar and Bhuj are particularly renowned. The Bandhnis from these areas differ from those of other regions in terms of designs and craftsmanship. In Jamnagar, Bandhni work is done on a special type of silky material. Initially, Bandhni work was done only on sarees. Later on, Bandhni salwar kameezes began to be produced. Nowadays, there are many items available in Bandhni, ranging from blouses and scarves to bedsheets and ties. Usually, Bandhni is done in bright colors such as red, green and black. Handmade colors were used earlier; but the scenario has changed now. The traditional patterns used in Bandhnis are dots, squares, waves and stripes. Bandhni is generally done on cotton, silk or satin material. The communities of Muslim Khatris in Kutchh have been doing Bandhni work since generations.

Gujarati sarees

There are different types of sarees that Gujarat is famous for. One of them is the ‘Gharchola’, which is woven with silk and zari threads. Bandhni work is then done on them or they are block-printed. Gharcholas are traditionally used as wedding sarees. The saree is divided into squares by white bandhni dots or stripes of zari. The number of squares are usually in multiples of 9, 12 or 52. Motifs like elephants, parrots, flowers and dancing girls are generally found in each compartment.
The ‘Patola’ saree produced in Patan, North Gujarat, is another type of saree that is well known. These sarees are handwoven and involve traditional patterns such as leaves, flowers, parrots and dancing girls. Patolas are generally produced in the red color with white, dark green and yellow patterns. Patola sarees are also considered to be wedding sarees. Simple traditional looms are used for weaving and natural dyes made from vegetable extracts and other natural colors are made use of. These colors are fast and do not fade easily. In fact, there is a Gujarati saying “The Patola will tear, but the color will not fade.”

The History of French Antique Textiles

It was during the Roman Empire days that silks were being imported from East
to Europe. Also, it was on the 11th and 12th centuries were the religious
conquest of Middle East and the Crusades spurred into France the flow of
Eastern goods.

The fledgling French textile companies were responsible in giving sources
of inspiration to the colors and design of the Eastern yard goods. The next
few centuries saw the French textile industry experienced a spurt of growth
fuelled by the demand from the French Royalty. The growth was also party due
to the court demands from the King and teh papal based in Avigon, France.

It was on the mid seventeenth century when France was one of the major
importers that imports foreign produced cloths. Though France's textile
industry had rapidly grown, there has been a great competition where in
goods in Italy and in the Far East were popular in producing cloths as well.
Then, that was the time when King Louis XIV established new laws that were
designed to lessen foreign yard goods imports and to promote silk industry
of France by improving the quality of goods produced. In this case it will
increase French Textiles export.

The laws that were established by King Louis XIV were designed to improve
and regulate the quality of French's cloths and silks. Regulations framed
by the people related to the technical aspects of silk production. They
quantified the exact fiber content, the permitted number of errors in the
course of a production run and also the number of threads in a warp or a
weft.. Furthermore, these new regulations made an industry division from
various regions in France. With these new King Louis' it resulted in a
positive way where in both the quantity and the quality of silks in France
were increased.

Unfortunately, it was also during the time of King Louis XIV that another
law was established and passed to protect the silk industry from being
competed. In this case, it prevents printed cloths from being manufactured
and sell. Needless to say, this restrictive law was finally lifted in the
mid seventeenth century.

Fish population endangered

But the coastal patrols, which have been strengthened year by year, are not very effective because of the vast sea area and its limited personnel and equipment.
When violators are caught and fined, they often go and catch more fish to make up for the losses.
During the past decade, areas that have been declared off-limits for fishing during different seasons have covered nearly all the country's territorial waters. "No fishing seasons" have also been set to protect immature or reproducing fish, shrimps and crabs.
The protection of aquatic resources is an undertaking for the whole nation.
