Banana plants are grown in varieties of countries world wide and are considered very useful in South Indian rituals and many of its parts have a lot of medicinal and nutritional value. Banana Stem (vazhathandu) extract is used to treat kidney stones. The stem juice with butter milk taken in empty stomach helps in weight reduction. In other places honey mixed with mashed banana is used for the same purpose. The green banana when eaten for a week, raises the body weight by minimum 2Kgs.
Serving food in banana leaves is mandatory in South Indian functions. The hot food when put on the banana leaves, absorbs the essential vitamins from the leaves and adds to our meal. The raw banana is used for making side dishes in Indian meals. We can also make cutlets with raw banana. It is also sliced and deep fried to make chips. A specific variety of Kerala state banana, which is also called 'Nedran banana' is widely used for making chips and is world wide famous.
